Byrd Memorial Most Promising Award

IFBB Pro Bodybuilder Andy Haman put on an entertaining performance for the Gateway Classic, Lake City audience that clearly appreciated his light hearted antics. There was not a bad seat in the house as evidenced by our photographer Musclepapa John's spot on the back row center, which has become his trademark shooting style this season. Look for more of Andy's antics featured at Tony's clothing website www.MonstaClothing.com.

Tony and his partner in the apparel business have big things in store at Monsta Clothing as evidenced by the size and demeanor of Big Andy Haman on Saturday night.

Chief Bottle Washer, web-guy, videographer and all around bad boy Musclepapa provides extensive photo coverage of the on-stage activities for our site from this years' NPC Gateway Classic. Catch all the classy class winners in bodybuilding, fitness, figure and yes bikini. There was a sizeable contingency of bikini babes on hand this year. The circuit regulars were there and new faces as well. The figure competitor pictured to the left came in quite shredded with facial beauty to die for.

Rachel McLish

As an example of just how far the sport of bodybuilding and figure have progressed compare photos of the 1980 bodybuilding Ms. Olympia Rachel McLish who wasn't nearly as hard as our Gateway Classic beauty on Saturday night in Lake City Florida. Okay, props to Rachel for all she had going and for setting the standard, but there are some great looking athletes pushing the envelop each year show after show.

MONSTA'S MAKEUP GATEWAY CLASSIC & MR & MS LAKE CITY

By Lisa White

NPC Europa Show of Champions with promoters Betty and Ed Pariso took place at the Orange County Civic Center opening its doors for a weekend filled with athletes participating in strongman, powerlifting, bodybuilding, flag football and other attractions. The venue will also be full of vendor booths including Monsta Clothing line with bodybuilding, fitness & figure promoter and co-owner Tony Curtis. This is a large venue for Tony and partner Chris and a great way to further create a household name for Monsta. Within the last year the Monsta Clothing line has successfully sky rocketed faster than Tony or Chris could anticipate and is the cause of some surprise and a lot of excitement.

Although Tony is elated about the clothing line he also has an upcoming event sure to rock the stages. The NPC Gateway Classic which takes place in Lake City, Florida is sure to be a sold out event at the Alfonso Levy Performing Arts Center of Lake City Community College. The house seats under 600 while the show usually has a lineup of 50-80 competitors but that was before the introduction of the bikini division. Tony admits he's unsure of how great the numbers will be this year since the addition of the bikini division; which has "blown up" in the sport of bodybuilding.

The NPC Gateway Classic is far more than a bodybuilding show for the athletes and area; offering entertainment and a way for the community to get involved in the sport on all levels.

NPC Gateway Classic

With the combination of the 2010 NPC Gateway Classic Bodybuilding, Fitness, Figure & Bikini Championships (Level 4A) and The Mr. & Ms. Lake City Bodybuilding, Fitness, Figure & Bikini Championships (Level I) the doors are open to athletes who are interested in participating in future national level shows, and more importantly, for the local athletes who love to compete in a more personal setting. These two shows run the gamut allowing athletes of all levels to perform in an arena best suited for them.

As for running the gamut; Tony has left no stone unturned with the creation of two full days of events for the athletes and community to take part in.

The day before the Gateway Classic IFBB Pro's Andy Haman and Debi Lavshevski will be doing a photo shoot at Future Fitness. Tony has stated this is free for any competitor or fan who would like to come watch the photo shoot and believes it's a great way for athletes to see what a photo shoot entails. That same day, competition weigh ins will be held at Future Fitness starting at 6:00-9:00 pm. Pre-judging will begin at 10:00am on April 23, 2010 and an evening show at 7:00pm.

For competitors, fans and families there is "down time" available at Moe's Southwest Grill around lunch time. It will be fun-filled with a hot bods, best abs, bikini and bench contests to participate in. As if Tony isn't already laying it on the line for entertainment; both Monsta sponsored IFBB Pro's Debi Lavshevski and Andy Haman will be at the show. Although Debi will not be doing guest posing she will be available for meets and greet along with autograph signing. For fans this is a great opportunity to see Debi up close and personal as she is one of the leading ladies in bodybuilding. Andy will be available for autographs, as well as, gracing the stage as the guest poser.

Andy is known for his stage presence and for amazing posing routines which is a treat for those who look up to him. Another NPC competitor will be there to sign autographs also and his name is Lee Banks. Many good things have been heard about Lee and Tony believes he has a great chance of going pro this year.

The NPC Gateway Classic is far more than a bodybuilding show. Tony has made this event an affair to mark in your calendars. It's open to the entire community with affordable prices at prejudging for $10 and $20 for the night show. Between the photo shoot, prejudging, Moe's, and the evening show there is a combination of things for supporters, fans and competitors to do.
For more information on the 2010 NPC Gateway Classic Bodybuilding, Fitness, Figure & Bikini Championships (Level 4A) and The Mr. & Ms. Lake City Bodybuilding, Fitness, Figure & Bikini Championships (Level I) please contact Tony Curtis at www.futurefitnessfl.com or www.npcgatewayclassic.com. He can also be reached by phone at 386-752-3100.

BodybuildingFitnessFigure.com would like to thank Tony Curtis and John Hawley for this interview. We wish Tony, his team and competitors the best of luck in their upcoming event.

Panhandle Showdown Promoter Russ Mesey Audio Interview

Thank you to Russ Mesey, promoter of the Panhandle Showdown for taking the time on Wednesday before his April 10th show in Pensacola to share with us some of the history, backstage finer points and details and what we can expect this year.

MaxFit Sports Nutrition Owner Russ Mesey Delivers for the Panhandle Showdown

by Lisa White

With only a day left until the 2010 NPC Panhandle Showdown you'd think promoter and owner of MaxFit Sports Nutrition Russ Mesey would be sweating bullets about his upcoming bodybuilding show, business and frachise developments. In actuality; it's quite the opposite as you'll learn from our recent interview between he and John Hawley of BodybuildingFitnessFigure.com. Russ Mesey hasn't relied on luck but on his team of people who have made the NPC Panhandle Showdown a noteworthy show and one that has consistently grown and gotten better. Russ credits many good fortunes to his co-promoters Mike Langford, Ty King and attending competitors from around the country, as well as, exemplary assistance from the host hotel Courtyard Marriott.

The NPC Panhandle has been a success from the beginning offering the stage for Florida natives and national competitors to take part in the level IV-A show. This year's line up includes more than 75 pre-registered and traveling distances from New Jersey, Colorado and Kentucky to partake in the event. Although there are substantial numbers of competitors pre-registered Russ is hoping for a larger turn out than last years 103 competitors and a total reaching 165 with crossovers. Russ also states novices need not be alarmed by the numbers as there are more than enough divisions to feel "well accomplished" with their placings. The prizes the Panhandle has set aside for the winners are also items to evoke grand emotion.

Russ believes the prizes should make competitors feel as if they won a pro-show; hence, the reason for diamond necklaces from Kimberly's Jewelers, as well as, custom made rings for the gentlemen. Gift bags were available to the first 75 registered athletes and were far more than regular take-out bags. The bag is a sling back-pack stuffed full of goodies from Gaspari, PowerShack and BSN, who have been kind enough to support the promoter's and athletes endeavors.

Competitors who would like the chance to compete in the Showdown must participate in the weigh-ins from 4:00pm until 7:00pm on Friday, April 9,2010.

The weigh-ins will be held at Power House Gym with no morning check-ins the day of the show. This works best for getting the prejudging underway in a timely fashion. The prejudging begins at Pensacola High School on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 9:30am with a 5:30pm evening show. This may seem a bit early but benefits the competitors by finishing early to allow time to enjoy the after party thrown by Russ and his team. Families of competitors will also enjoy the area as it's located close to fine and casual dining restaurants and within minutes of the beach.

For competitors who won't be able to make the Showdown participating in a competition promoted by Russ is still possible with the upcoming 2nd Annual EMERALD COAST POWER EXPO; which will be held on September 11, 2010. The expo consists of bodybuilding, kickboxing, grappling, powerlifting, strongman and more. For more information on the NPC Panhandle Showdown or the Emerald Coast Power Expo please contact Russe Mesey at russ@iammaxfit.com, www.PanhandleShowdown.com and www.ecpexpo.com, or MaxFit Sports Nutrition, Ft. Walton Beach, Navarre & Pace, FL. Tel. 850-244-1629 Fax: 850-244-6555

BodybuildingFitnessFigure.com would like to thank Russ Mesey and John Hawley for the interview and wish the best of luck to Russ, his team and the competitors of the NPC Panhandle Showdown.

Thursday Night LIVE!

Iron Works Show with host Michael Ives and the Ancient City Classic Promoter Gene Schlossburg

Ancient City Classic

Dare to Jump on Stage at the 2010 NPC Ancient City Classic

by Lisa White

When it comes to fitness there are vast reasons people use for not exercising. Their joints ache, too tired, not enough time in the day and a hundred others. Many never think exercise may be the fountain of youth, but in the case of Gene Schlossberg he's proving them wrong. He's truly a testament that exercise is the fountain of youth since he's been in the bodybuilding circuit since 1949. Gene has reveled in his roles as bodybuilder, owner of two World Gym's and promoter of NPC Ancient City Classic for the eleventh year, as well as, co-promoter of the NPC All South. As a gym owner in St. Augustine, Florida, Gene has seen the evolution of the standard gym and has stayed current with the times. His World Gym on US Hwy 1 is 25,000 feet while the beach side express gym also offers 24 hour service for those who don't keep regular hours.

With all of this under his belt you'd think Gene would slow down but not a chance. For months Gene has been planning it and over the coming weeks he and his team of staff and volunteers will put the finishing touches on the setup of his Level II NPC Ancient City Classic bodybuilding show. This show is open to surrounding counties for bodybuilding and statewide for figure and bikini and Schlossberg likes it that way. He and his team have maintained this level show because he believes it's important to have them to build confidence especially for beginners and first timers. NPC competitor Mike Ives can attest to this as one of his fondest memories in bodybuilding came from the 2004 Ancient City Classic.

The venue is the Pedro Menendez High School Performing Arts Center and holds 540 spectators and regularly sells out. He also stated Alisa Hostettler and her crew from Hot Spot will be there providing spray tanning for competitors on Friday and Saturday. He gives "big props" to Alisa for her professionalism and great job she does for the athletes. For those wanting to compete in the event weigh-ins are on May 14, 2010 from 6-8pm and May 15, 2010 from 8-10am with prejudging beginning at 10:00am. The evening show is on May 15, 2010 at 7:00pm and usually ends around 10:00pm. Beacher's Lodge is the host hotel and is very accommodating for family and friends. The hotel is serving generosity up as it's giving discounts for those participating in the event. Family and friends who have come to support the athletes will have more than enough to do in the oldest and most mystical city in the nation. Ancient City competitors also are invited to take advantage of complimentary use of Gene’s World Gym while in town so that they don’t have to break their routine, but still enjoy everything this weekend has to offer.

With his 80th birthday last November he has seen many new athletes begin their careers; including promoter John Mier when he was an aspiring rock star. Now, John is not only a promoter for the NPC Jax Physique but is "one of the best trainers in Northeast Florida" states Schlossburg. He also admits promoting this show is a way for him to work with the new athletes and to enjoy the camaraderie of the judges and competitors. Enjoyment comes in all forms and Gene is hoping the NPC Ancient City Classic is nothing but. As for Gene answering the question is he competing again? Not at this time, but he admits if he can find a show with an "over-the-hill" division he'll be the first in line. And, why shouldn't he? His long history of talking the talk and walking the walk has paved a solid road for athletes to follow. For those who don't believe he practices what he preaches he can be found training five days a week for an hour or hour and a half at one of his gyms. If you still don't believe him; he'd love for you to come by and test him. As a matter of fact, he dares you to.

BodybuildingFitnessFigure.com would like to thank Gene Schlossberg and Michael Ives for this year’s interview. We also extend our best wishes to Gene, his team and the competitors in the upcoming event. For more information on the NPC Ancient City Classic please contact Gene at www.ancientcityclassic.com or at 904-829-3443.

NPC Jax Physique

2010 NPC Jax Physique A Big Hit!

Promoters John Mier of www.PremierPhysiques.com personal training & Mr. Olympia Dexter Jackson aided handily by Gale Elie put on a masterful 2nd Annual NPC Jax Physique competition on April 3rd in Jacksonville, Florida. Participation was more than double what it was last year despite Shannon Dey, the Florida Women's Chair encouraging many of her Florida based competitors to compete out of state that weekend. There are many great shows on any given weekend around the country. However, if you have the opportunity to support a local or regional show while preparing for the national and pro ranks please do so. To do otherwise undermines the tiered system that gives life to shows like the Jax Physique. Local show promoters and athletes need your support.
