Toney Freeman Arrest

Arrest of Black Professional Bodybuilder in Sweden

When the subject of Sweden comes up it usually involves some white snow capped mountains and pretty petite Swedish women, white women. Recently on a visit to Sweden IFBB Professional Bodybuilder Toney Freeman was arrested with the official excuse being he looked like a steroid user. The photo to the right suggests the arresting officer was larger than Freeman. What's the difference? Compare skin colors. Sweden is one of the nationalist strongholds for the institutional promotion of Anglo community. Don't take our word for it though. Consider the study, "Institutional racism in Sweden and Europe" by Paul Lappalainen. There are efforts within Sweden to reform these policies as with ENAR. Consider their findings LINK

Coming Story: Muscle Mag Popularity: Fact or Fiction?

Do Distribution Numbers Lie?

Research for this story are underway. Magazine distribution numbers don't actually tell the whole story about a magazine's actual level of demand as there are a variety of schemes used to increase distribution numbers and run up advertising rates.

Sometimes it is outright fraud with publishers of smaller magazines lying about the numbers they publish and distribute. There are also schemes and low efficiencies associated with the handful of remaining magazine distribution company practices that also have to be considered. According to one such company executive 64,000 returns are associated with each 100,000 magazines that enter the national distribution chain.

A substantial component of magazine profitability is the money made off of advertising and where with companies such as AMI that owns Weider Nutrition they heavily advertise their own supplements in their magazines. Magazine sales thus have a two-fold value in direct earnins and in the marketing of their supplements that constitutes the majority of the Weider stock market value.

Although we continue to research this story there were interesting findings and claims made in a lawsuit against various publishers and magazine distribution companies by one of their own that you might find enlightening LINK BACK.

Bad Advice Delivered by the Women For the Women

by John Hawley

Women are increasingly recognized as elite personal trainers and the voice in delivering questionable supplement company claims. Florida based Figure Pro & BodyWell/Tight Curves Nutrition Company Owner Kristal Richardson is just such an example. On November 13, 2008 the Chicago Tribune published Reporter Julie Deardorffs' story "Five exercises to avoid" advice that was attributed to Richardson. Don'ts included sit-ups, weighted squats, behind-the-neck shoulder presses, straight leg push-ups and standing deadlifts(LINK). Richardson responded to the article with, "Thank you to those who gave me the benefit of the doubt that I was misquoted in the Chicago Trib...which I was-EXTREMELY misquoted. Clearly, as a competitor and trainer, I would never tell women not to do deadlifts, situps, pushup or squats. I've done all of the above...and lots of them!" 1

Deardoff in turn denied misquoting Richardson and stated she took that charge very seriously. Deardoff followed up with, "That said, I have my notes, I have several email exchanges between Kristal and I have the original press release that Kristal's publicist sent titled "The top five exercises women should NEVER do" (and if my article is wrong, then what are the top five exercises?)." 2

The press release Deardoff received was from KMR Communications in New York that represented Bodywell Nutrition. After requesting a copy of that press release Jessica Lennon, Senior Account Executive replied, "We are no longer representing Bodywell Nutrition and/or Kristal Richardson. For any press materials, collateral, etc., please contact Bodywell Nutrition directly." 3

Founder of BodyWell Nutrition IFBB Pro Bodybuilder Jimmy Mentis in conversation about the article in December '08 sought to divert the focus onto the importance of appealing to the mainstream and how the BodyWell products would be on shelves in WalMart soon. It was a latent acknowledgement that regardless of whether the fitness information was erroneous or not it was part of a strategy to market products to the mainstream population. Mentis has since split with the Richardsons' and is marketing his www.BeautyFit.com line heavily through GNC and through his www.facebook.com/jimmymentis.

Even in light of public denials and assertions that Deardoff misquoted her aspects of the news release ("Standing Dead lift: This exercise is the ultimate no-no in any woman's workout routine") have been displayed at www.bodywellnutrition.com/news.html 4 since September 2009 coupled with another release from Lennon at KMR Communications about the new Top Secret Weight Loss product launch in WalMart Canada. 5

The Richardson's BodyWell Nutrition has dropped the TightCurves line and is reformulating itself in the months after the Mentis split as Top Secret Nutrition. 6

Regardless, it is no secret that bad advice is gender neutral.

****************************************************

Even though Kristal could honestly say she did situps, squats and these other exercises the message sent out by BodyWell/Tight Curves Owners Jimmy Mentis, Tom Richardson and Augusto Vidaurreta through the public relations firm was quite different. Tom is more than a fond husband that encouraged Kristal to compete in figure that in turn resulted in her attaining IFBB Pro status and back to back wins at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup. Richardson and Vidaurreta are longtime business partners and consulting gurus who founded the Systems Consulting Group (SCG) and together have had ownership in a Miami restaurant, The Radisson Riverwalk Hotel, Canopy Palms Hotel, Horizon Bank and Infinet. Does that translate into a profitable supplement line? Maybe if you have a popular product and pitch.
At this stage it appears the product and message are in question. Two of the principles in the firm are out, the Tight Curves name is gone while this mass appeal targeted message remains at the www.bodywell.com site, "'Push-ups put unnecessary stress on almost every part of the body. Leave them to the Marines and try the dumbbell bench press instead for toning the chest and shoulders,' cautions Kristal." There are women in the Marines and they do pushups and shouldn't be considered un-feminine, manly or whatever else supplement peddlers would like to pitch to create a non-threatening purchasing environment for the average WalMart shopper.
Watered down training regimens won't produce better athletes any more than watered down supplements will.

The word released Monday Nov. 29 is that this years' Florida NPC Sanctioning meeting will be for judges and promoters only! If you need further information contact Peter Potter, phone: 954.763.2718 - email: usasports@juno.com

Florida NPC Sanctioning Meeting; Dec 4, 2010

Every year in Florida the NPC officials and promoters gather in a semi-public meeting to discuss rule changes, hash out schedules assignments, and reflect on the past season and discuss pertinent issues facing the promoters, athletes and NPC going into the next year.

NPC members in good standing are welcome to attend and generally anyone can attend as they don't check ID's and it isn't a security concern.

The meetings start for the largest district of the three in Florida that being the Central District headed by Pete Fancher at 9am. Then at 10am the general state meeting headed by NPC State Chair & NPC Vice Chairman Peter Potter proceeds with Fancher & Women's Chair Shannon Dey likewise being on-deck dealing with issues relevant to the entire district.

Florida is something of a bell weather state for the entire NPC considering the large number of shows and influence of officials and high profile promoters.

Pete Fancher along with being the NPC Florida Central District Chair is promoter of the NPC All South Championships along with Gene Schlossburg who hosts the Ancient City Classic.

Peter Potter along with being the NPC Vice Chair and Florida State Chair is likewise an IFBB judge and promoter of the NPC Southern States along with Maria Bellando and Emmanuel Mare.

Shannon Dey is an IFBB Professional Fitness competitor and a high profile trainer of the most highly recognized training team for women seeking IFBB Professional Bikini status. Dey likewise co-promotes the IFBB Ft. Lauderdale Cup and copromotes the historic Southern USA in Panama City with Pat Sporer. For several years Dey along with her husband Rob operated American Body Plus magazine. Rob typically attends the meeting and pitches the possible value of his magazine in marketing competitions in Florida.

Mr. Olympia Dexter Jackson promotes several shows in Florida including the Jacksonville Pro Figure & 202 Bodybuilding along with the Dexter Jackson Classic & Jax Physique along with John Mier with aide from the affable Gale Elie. Jackson, Mier & Elie typically attend the meeting.

Tim "The Guru" Gardner is a prominent IFBB judge, Florida state judge, and promoter of numerous competitions including the Pro Bodybuilding Weekly Tampa Pro. Likewise, Gardner and wife IFBB Pro Brandie Gardner are leaders of one of the largest personal training, competition groups Team Body Tech anywhere in the nation with many highly recognized and successful IFBB pros and amateurs being a part of that organization.

Promoters and officials Deke Warner, Tony Curtis, Chris Eaddy, Deb & Jack Callahan, Bev & Matt DiRenzo typically attend and are key to many of the discussions that take place. South and West Florida Promoters with much longer drives to reach the meeting do not tend to attend every year, but rather every other year if they are likewise attending to meet official judging status requirements.

There is the opportunity for vendors servicing the industry and wanting to address the promoters in one location to speak briefly and pitch their opportunities if they have approval from Peter Potter. You should be brief and succinct in making your pitch to the group and make sure to offer to answer any questions and provide contact information. Introduce yourself one on one to each promoter. If you don't know who they are introduce yourself to each person anyhow. Everyone tends to be very friendly and welcoming at these meetings.

While anyone can attend Potter asks that much of the information be sequestered and not reported out of context to the wider public. Such information comes from within the working group aspect of the meeting where schedules are hashed out and there is free and open discussion and debates on various issues. It is this sort of open discussion and often aired disagreements over interpretation of rules and regulations and their implementation that the officials and average NPC member can gain greater understanding of the complexities involved in the process.

This isn't a particularly appropriate place to strip down and ask one of the judges what you need to do to come into your best shape to win their show. However, the judges and promoters can often times share with you their thoughts about how best to perform, competitive expectations at their shows, share ancillary information about their events that won't be available likely anywhere else and such. This is an excellent opportunity to get to know the officials and promoters better.

We encourage everyone to attend.

Florida NPC 2010 Year In Review

Later in the year we fell off the wagon with some of our coverage plans of Florida NPC shows. It was hit and miss at best. Prior to the Southeastern USA and our implementation of the new vbulletin forum we more systematically compiled photo, video, audio and textual content directly on the website as can be reviewed at www.bodybuildingfitnessfigure.com/Calendar.html

We will tighten this section up for archival purposes and considering it gives an easy quick reference to the year in review.

Grace In Lace

Controversy arose after we released photos of the bikini division winner at the Dayana Cadeau Classic wearing lingerie. Lacey as we refer to the lacey lingerie wearing diva handled her business on stage as an obvious standout that night in Ft. Lauderdale. Lacey is a shoe in for bikini pro. Every movement gushed femininity, style and grace.

Her performance was so strong aside from the lingerie that it begs the question as to what it takes to not only be a Bikini Pro, but a lady in modern society. Couple the rise of feminism with the lack of societal interest in manners generally and women today know much less about feminine style and etiquette than they did during these same women's grandmother's time. Very few females today are trained in the social graces. Obviously a trained model will be better as with Lacey's performance in this video.

We see the comparisons between the trained lady and rest particularly in the bikini division where not only the body must meet a standard, but the posing is scored on feminine style and grace as with Lacey's exhibition in the video. Other women in the video clip with Lacey looked good, but NONE came close in matching the way she moved with feminine, style and grace. These issues will challenge women in confronting their view of each other and themselves.

Cory Everson is a household name, but which Cory?

by Musclepapa John

Cory Everson is a household name, but which Cory? There are two Cory Everson's and both have done film work. There is the iconic fifty-two year old Ms. Olympia Cory Everson who went undefeated in that contest from 1984 to 1989 after which time she retired and appeared in movies and a great variety of television programs.

There is also Cory Everson, a thirty-three year old Czech porn star with more than forty films to her credit since 2005. The Internet is replete with a slurry composite of their work separately that becomes one with a search for photos and video.

The titillation that Cory the Olympiad provided in her sexy shoots and film footage was provocative in its day, but Porn star Cory Everson has blown the doors off a barn full of morays with her work.

Twenty years of branding and reputation building by Cory the Olympiad has literally been lay bare. Marketers in the porn industry have long been ahead of the curve in use of Internet tools which translates in plain language to Cory the porn star having a better manager than Ms. Olympia. Plus, even in the fitness industry a thirty something year old woman who will do anything for fame and fortune has an edge over a Golden Era Hall of Famer.

Grody better describes the landscape these days as compared to gilded in the era of Corinna. Many of the most recognized of today's female bodybuilders like porn star Everson have put aside sexual suggestiveness and replaced it with a more assertive and aggressive tone possibly out of necessity. The same goes for those working in the fitness industry. Olympia Cory Everson's direction as provocateur of sensual and sexy female muscle was likewise a harbinger of what we've seen with the evolution of feminism, female bodybuilding and the general acceptance of pornography in every day life.

Fit women have more influence over their lives than the rest. As with porn star Cory Everson though she can only shape her destiny until the next one comes along.
