Carmen Larreal Fitness Routine Mid Florida Classic 2010
Our own Chica Doc Carmen Larreal performs one of her fitness routines at the Mid Florida Classic 2010. Carmen performed marvelously even though she suffered through a great deal of pain as toes on both feed had been badly bruised after back to back shows over the preceding weeks. Like the ballerina she is trained to be from her youth in Venezuela one would expect no less than to struggle through the performance with no sign of anything, but artistic grace. Eryn Strickland Chat with Deke Warner by Lisa White
NPC Competitor and co-host of Sports After Dark Eryn Strickland presented fans with a different sort of show this past week by having an appearance from Mr. Deke Warner. Who is Deke? He has many titles such as bodybuilder, bodybuilding judge and NPC Official but most importantly he is the promoter to both the NPC Mid Florida Muscle Classic Bodybuilding, Fitness, Figure and Bikini Championships, as well as, the NPC Florida State Bodybuilding competition. Deke has been in the industry for many years and began his role in the NPC by competing in 1982. During this time he has learned the ropes of the NPC and has helped to make the Mid Florida and Florida State two very strong shows.
Deke began promoting bodybuilding events 15 years ago but that doesn't mean he has forgotten about his athletes. His career started in the gym when he was training himself for bodybuilding shows and he continues in the fitness industry as a nutritionist and personal trainer to new talent. Deke has a philosophy when it comes to his athletes and it's simple: he likes to work with no more than ten athletes at one time and he trains athletes in every division.
He believes it can pit competitors against each other if he's training them for the same shows and has found it to be better by spreading them out so each gets personal attention.
Due to his reputation there's no suprise how busy he is as an official, promoter and trainer.
As the Florida NPC Central District Vice Chairman he will answer questions that have to do with competing in the NPC if the Chairman Pete Fancher is not available. Whether it's a simple question about weight classes or the more recent issues with appropriate bikini's Deke will help as best as he can. As a judge, Deke also has an explanation for Eryn and those athletes or fans who feel competitors were inappropriately judged. He states the sport is objective; not subjective which is usually the argument when someone has not placed higher than they expected to. Judges are directly in front of the competitors and are able to see every aspect of a competitor's physique. Deke explains a person can look great from ten rows back or the complete opposite but the judges make the very best decisions possible. His own personal experiences as a competitor in local, regional and national level shows has led to his foray into promoting and has led to great show successes.
Over the years, he payed attention and took note of the actions behind the scenes and learned what could be added or taken from each to create a great show. Mr. Warner's NPC Mid Florida show has held fast with an average of over 100 competitors each year. Much of it's due to the "open ear" policy Deke offers his competitors. Just as he answers questions as the Vice Chairman, he listens to suggestions and feedback as the promoter. With feedback from each show he has changed or incorporated ideas to present the best bodybuilding event possible. As if the history of the NPC Mid Florida doesn't speak for itself; the 2009 NPC Florida State was re-located and had a stellar outcome of 169 competitors. With the additions of cross-overs the tally reached over 200 athletes compared to it's days before Deke’s leadership and an average of 50-60. Deke hopes this year's event to be no different and plans to keep creating the best possible events for all competitors.
The event will be held on June 19, 2010 at Howard Middle School with the host hotel being the Courtyard by Marriot. Athletes and fans of bodybuilding can find get all the info and contact information, entry forms and more at www.DekeWarner.com. Deke is also available directly via email at Deke@Bellsouth.net.

Larissa Reis Comes Out To Play Sports After Dark
By Lisa White
Although bodybuilding, fitness, figure and bikini has some unspoken standard rules for it's competitors there are some athletes who push the standards to the brink each time. This doesn't necessarily mean he or she is doing it on purpose but doing it because they feel comfortable in the sport to do so. The interview between IFBB Pro Larissa Reis and Hosts Erin Strickland and Allison Moyer of Sports After Dark is letting others know that Larissa is out to make a statement with her hard earned physique and strong stage presence.
During the last few years Larissa has done well for herself in the IFBB and very well in the 2009 season by placing first in the Atlantic City Pro and coming in second in the New York City Pro. Larissa's edgy look and tight presentation has presented her opportunities in modeling for luminaries like Playboy to sponsorships with Nutrex, a high profile and very successful company. Substantial sponsorship on her dossier is something to be proud of but maybe more so that she is the first Brazilian competitor to have ever won an IFBB pro show.
When asked by Eryn Strickland, "who are you training with right now? Do you work with any one trainer for nutrition or do you do all by yourself?" it was a bit surprising to here Larissa answer "No. I do it by myself. Everything I do by myself." Many of the athletes, including pros reach out to trainers for help with contest prep. Even with her pro card in hand Eryn asked "since you've turned pro, what has been in your opinion the greatest improvement you've made to your physique?" Larissa states she has changed her style and "I did some improvement to my upper body because in Brazil we are more into legs and glutes and here the girls are more into upper body. So I had to adapt my body to the American style." And, her training style coupled with genetics and diet have surely paid off on stage.
Besides her busy training schedule for the Olympia, wherein she has increased her cardio to two-a-days she is training clients, as well. So with all that's on her plate already "what are your plans for the rest of 2010, any upcoming projects going on, anything you'd kind of like to talk about or announce" asks Allison Moyer. For Larissa, her big plans are to improve her English and take some acting classes. She says her English isn't good enough yet and in order to work in film she needs to work on that. As for the rest of her career Larissa admits she would like to earn more sponsorship contracts, many more simultaneously and continue to do well in the sport.

Marie Ann Newman Chats with with Maria Bellando about Fitness & the NPC Southern States
This week Marie Ann Newman chats with one of the most important & influential voices in the sport and industry Maria Bellando, promoter of the NPC Southern States to be held this year on July 9-10.
Maria Bellando Southern States Fitness, Figure & Bikini Championships
by Lisa White
In the world of bodybuilding there are some events that are big and some that are L-A-R-G-E as in the case of the Maria Bellando Southern States Fitness, Figure & Bikini Championships. Competitors new to the circuit may be surprised after signing up for this show at the high caliber competition they will face. Maria Bellando began promoting the 31-year-old show eleven years ago and has seen the stages filled with many of the highest caliber athletes from across the nation.
Maria's own rise to the IFBB Pro level was rather quick but that doesn't mean it wasn't well earned. After years of gymnastics training Maria set out to do a mixed pairs bodybuilding show after being dared on a bet and the bet paid off. In a line up of dozens of girls she came in seventh place. From that point on she was hooked she explained to IFBB Pro Marie Ann Newman during her interview on the Mo Knows Fitness show. Her career began in bodybuilding, just as Mo's career began with Maria crossing over to fitness and Mo to figure. The crossover was smooth due to her history in gymnastics, but now it wasn't just the grueling diet she had to worry about but the routine she would have to perform. The training, routines and dieting paid off and Maria Bellando earned her pro-card in 1998. Maria has not only gone on to compete but continues to train a multitude of athletes and choreograph routines for competitors whether competing in the South Florida area or the Olympia stage in the case of Dayana Cadeau.
As an efficient tactician and warm straightforward lady Maria has earned her reputation as a great promoter, fitness athlete and personal trainer. The Maria Bellando Southern States Fitness, Figure & Bikini Championships to be held in Fort Lauderdale on July 9-10 is one of the largest and most steadfast traditions within the bodybuilding schedule. The two-day event begins on Friday and has a full day of competitions on Saturday. The Friday show is for the ladies and there is no prejudging. These athletes are judged live in front of the audience. As with national level NPC competitions the competitors must rely on camaraderie rather than their trainers who are not allowed backstage. Maria states that she wants the athletes to feel as if they are doing a national show as this is a way to prep for nationals.
Promoting the Maria Bellando Southern States Fitness, Figure & Bikini Championships is no easy task and Maria has made it a priority to have the best venue and sponsors that draws a star studded crowd as well. The event will be taking place at the War Memorial Auditorium and as usual is expected this year to have a packed house. In years past it had been at the Convention Center but the family like ambiance just wasn't there. A few of the many sponsors include Met-Rx, Gaspari, Labrada, MuscleTech, and Flex.
It is not too late to purchase tickets or send in an entry form for the 2010 Maria Bellando NPC Southern States Championships. The numbers are expected to be large with close to 120 girls for fitness, figure and bikini on Friday and a few hundred for bodybuilding on Saturday. All information can be found on www.NPCSouthernStates.com or you can contact Maria at MBFit1@bellsouth.net. Tickets can also be purchased from TicketMaster.
Editors Note: BodybuildingFitnessFigure.com would like to thank both IFBB Pro's Maria Bellando and Marie Ann Newman for their informative interview and our staff writer and natural figure competitor Lisa White for producing this pre-show coverage.
ChicaDoc Carmen Larreal & Angela Cherry
Carmen hosts conversation with figure competitor Angela Cherry whose overcome more than the rigors of a competition diet and weight training, but fought for her very life last year after a breast cancer diagnosis. Listen in as Carmen and Cherry talk about how a healthy attitude and lifestyle got her through and can help you.
Dr. Carmen Larreal Interviews Figure Competitor and Survivor Angela Cherry
by Lisa White
Behind every competitor there's a story full of life experience that makes each athlete who he is. Regardless of humble beginnings or lavish lifestyles there's a competitor that's able to get the courage and strength to step on stage; no matter the difficulties. Every sport has a fighter or survivor who has an abundance of courage enough for ten and at www.BodybuildingFitnessFigure.com we have met some of these athletes that warm the heart and give strength to those who didn't know they had it. NPC Competitor Angela Cherry is one of those fighters and in her struggles with breast cancer has become a light in a long dark tunnel for others who have found themselves in the same position.
In Dr. Carmen Larreal’s interview with her Angela notes her beginnings were in bodybuilding and she crossed over to the figure division. After five years under her belt, including winning the overall and open division at the Europa, she decided to take a break. After a period of time Angela felt she had to get back into the swing of things and planned to do a Sept.11 show in her area, as well as, the NPC All Forces Show in Tampa and prep for a show to be held in Miami. During her prep she noticed a lump under her arm.
Angela's competition prep was actually a blessing as the doctor believed she would not have found this lump if she had a higher body fat percentage. She was at eight percent body fat which made the stage one cancerous lump easier to find. Due to her adoptive background she was not sure of her medical history and is the first in her family to have cancer. During the month of August Angela's lump was biopsied and on September 18 she was diagnosed with breast cancer but planned to do the show she was training for on October 5, 2009 anyway.
After having surgery on October 20 she began her treatments which successfully concluded in May 2010. “I all the time try to see life as a gift,” Carmen said. “It doesn’t matter how many things are going on in your life. I think we have a lot of things to be happy and content for. And we do not realize that how beautiful everything is around us until something like this happens.”
And, did breast cancer change the soon-to-be 38 year old's view on life? Yes, is the answer. “At the moment I was only focused on staying on track and doing the show,” Angela said. “I think the day after I did the show I realized “Hey, your life is about to change; you have been diagnosed with cancer." It made me see things a lot different.” She has made it her priority to experience new things as well as to help those around her. Her bout with cancer has been a journey and she has realized this is a way for her to educate other women. Although her treatments are finished she still visits her chemotherapy center to talk with other women needing help coping. She inspires and is a role model for those fighting the fight. Not only has Angela opened the doors to help others, but receive unbelievable support from her family, friends, Personal Trainer Rodney, Janice her dance instructor and her team at work. There was always someone there for comfort or to lend an ear and this foundation became the structure for her support system. Now that Angela has finished treatment she has plans to get back on stage in 2011 and plans for one of the shows to be Roger Puffer’s NPC All Forces Show.
Editors note: www.BodybuidingFitnessFigure.com would like to thank Dr. Carmen Larreal and Angela Cherry for this interview and our Staff Writer Lisa White for the article. For more information or questions Angela Cherry she can be contacted at virgoag71@yahoo.com. The All Forces Military Show will be held this year on Oct. 19 and more information is available at www.allforceschampionships.us.
In the June 3 interview on IFBB Pro Don Longs' Audio show Big Bill Wilmore revealed some interesting points as to whether or not he will push to participate in his forth Olympia or not. "It's not enough for me to just go to the Olympia," Wilmore said. "When you first start out in bodybuilding it is a dream of yours. Now all those guys are my fellow competitors and friends and everything else and a lot of times at the Olympia unfortunately it is so competitive and there are so many good guys you need a little bit of momentum going into a show like that. A lot of times even at the press conference you can be at the Mr. Olympia and they won't ask you one question."
I've seen this at various pro show press conferences and thought actually that Dave Palumbo is one of the best interviewers at these events as with the Tampa Pro going to each athlete and getting a few words from them. What will it take to get Big Bill on the Olympia stage in 2010? "If I can make a lot of changes like I think I can and I can get some people talking about me and stuff like that it makes more sense for me to do it," Wilmore said. And that makes sense to us. Let's get talking about Big Bill Wilmore!
Tuesday, June 1st Audio Show
Internet Audio Broadcast featuring Jack Callahan talking about the Central Florida District Championships & a little something about Deb's return to the Bodybuilding stage!
Conversation with Jack Callahan: A Trooper For the Sport
In another discussion I've had recently with famed documentarian Mike Pulcinella about what people want to see
and hear in video promos for competitions he noted they don't want details about the show, which may be true. That's the thinking when we see car commercials with no cars or some such sort of commercial that seems to have absolutely nothing to do with the subject. Well the audio link above does relate to the show, but includes a lot of conversation about Jack's experience when competing and eating 3-4lbs of orange roughy per day and stinking so bad they told him not to come to work. A check out girl told a bag boy to take the bag of potatoes he was attempting to purchase back as they had spoiled. It was Jack not the potatoes.
Jack also tells about the days when he and Deb did mixed pairs at NPC shows and why he believes they did away with that division as it was popular, but too difficult to judge. I think it would be worthwhile to bring it back even if as an unscored exhibition sport where you get a trophy for competing, but not a comparative score. Anyway there is also all that supposedly boring information included about the show, the stuff athletes need to know that are competing in it. Oh, and the
judging seminar and its benefits are discussed along with the fact that IFBB Pro Bev Direnzo is guest posing both nights and will likely give us a preview of her routine for the upcoming Tampa Pro :o)

Life Long Nutrition show Presents Battle on the Coast with Promoter Ty Pope
When it comes to the NPC Battle on the Coast there is far more to it than a bodybuilding show. The name lends itself to something deeper and more meaningful as explained by promoter Ty Pope during his recent interview with IFBB Pro Don Long and wife NPC competitor Sarah Long. The promoter, NPC Competitor and pastor has a history within the bodybuilding community and has promoted this show as a way to give back to the community that has given him so much.
During his history with bodybuilding Ty has also led a life in ministry. Even with his great record of winning the 2006 South Eastern USA's overall title, second place at the Team Universe, as well as, winning the overall title in 2008 for the All South show he left bobybuilding for seven years for the ministry and became the pastor for Life on the Horizon. As he states to Don and Sarah there is an intertwining of bodybuilding and ministry for Ty. He believes ideas can be incorporated for both the ministry and fitness industry and has titled his show and church to represent life's victories and a positive lifestyles.
When Ty isn't at the church he can be found training himself or other clients. In fact, at the Battle of the Coast he will have three clients participating. When asked how he is handling the diet for his competitors and for himself Ty responds that monitoring carbs and fats seems to work the best so he and his competitors don't burn off all the hard earned muscle from the off season. As for Ty's own personal diet he will be sticking to seven meals a day and sees the most results from high intensity training. Pushing and challenging the muscles in every session is the way he gets the most polished finish. One of the roles he has also taken on with his competitors is that of coach. With the first-timers he is doing a lot of coaching, reassuring and giving words of encouragement.
Although he is getting ready for his own contest prep he is excited to promote NPC Battle of the Coast and has many sponsors in his corner such as Gaspari, Muscleology, Purists Lab and others totalling twelve. Ty will also have members from his congregation there to give out reading material and to help with the event but have no fear; this is not an in your face religious experience. Ty believes the more subtle approach is much more apprectiated when it comes to combining religion and bodybuilding and has learned that both are about bettering yourself.
Editor's Note: We would like to thank promoter Ty Pope and IFBB Pro Don Long and Sarah for an informative interview and our staff writer and natural figure competitor Lisa White for producing this pre-show coverage. We would also like to wish Ty the best of luck in his upcoming event. For more information on the NPC Battle of the Coast it can be located at www.battleonthecoast.com.

IFBB Pro Ava Cowan Opens up on Sports After Dark
By Lisa White
Anyone, who's anyone, has heard or seen the beautiful Ava Cowan. The striking features, hard body and undeniable stage presence is one that has made waves for fans of bodybuilding and sexy women. Behind every photo, magazine advertisement and competition there's the human being who has endured and grown from the experiences of life. Ava is no different. This is not to say her life has been sad or bitter sweet but like many others it takes life experience to get to the top. She goes into detail during her interview on Sports after Dark with hosts NPC competitors Eryn Strickland and Allison Moyer about her life and competing.
With her childhood years emerged in gymnastics she learned the appreciation of sports although she didn't get into fitness until after she became a Certified Personal Trainer. Before this, her career was engulfed with the passion for acting but as she states this was was not the avenue for her and not for a lack of trying. However many auditions she went on she also received a call back but as the industry would have it there's always the catch 22. They were looking for the name, but without experience she couldn't get the name. Although the name may not have been enough in the eyes of Hollywood it has certainly been a name to anyone who's into fitness. Being one of the most photographed women in 2009 Ava has created a name for herself in the sport of bodybuilding. So much so that she has won over Gaspari Nutrition, touched others with her personal demons and has overcome obstacles regardless of the climb to do it.
During the interview Ava discussed her issues with past addictions. Though she is a private person she hopes her story can help touch someone in a positive light. Her ins-and-outs with addiction led her to rehab on several occasions and in the end she has persevered and will be clean seven years next month. Even now, with nearly seven years behind her she still gets a bit nervous and overwhelmed discussing it but feels she has to be honest about her struggles in life. Even with these struggles she has moved on to bigger things in the world of bodybuilding. Even with a five month suspension in 2009 from the NPC for competing in another federation Ava still landed on her feet and holds no hard feelings. Her win in Bikini Universe was a wonderful experience but she also understands that it wouldn't be fair to come straight back to the NPC.
During this time her life was evolving by becoming a new addition to the Gaspari team. Her new venture with Gaspari wasn't just another ad with a pretty face but one with a message that Ava Cowan is an athlete. The campaign is huge and doesn't revolve around the "sexpot" image that many other ads commonly use for women. Not only did she earn her pro card, gain the respect of Gaspari but has landed one of the most enviable relationships with IFBB Pro Mark Alvisi. Though everything may seem charmed Ava admits to Alli and Eryn she has kissed a lot of frogs and now it's her time to shine.
