Ava Cowan After Dark

Eryn Strickland & Allison Moyer host conversation with Ava Cowan about this extremely visible new IFBB Figure Professional. Cowan went in-depth on overcoming drug addiction and staying clean. Eryn felt strongly about this as she noted having similar issues in her past. Ava's seven year anniversary clean will be June 24. Maybe give her a friendly congrats around that date.

Discussion about competing in the multiple federations went down. Ava acknowledged enjoying certain aspects of other federations, but she always wanted to be an IFBB pro. There were consequences to competing in multiple federations as she was suspended from June till November of last year.

Never been happier than with Mark Alvisi who she moved in with after they hooked up after meeting last year and working out in the same gym and working together. "I've kissed enough frogs. I deserved this," Ava chuckled. Frogs never had it so good :o)

Ava is making her IFBB Pro Figure debut at the Jacksonville Pro. She thought she looked her best at nationals and plans to get there in shape and give it her best.

Her big goals include getting a publishing contract and a reality television show. Eryn joked with her about doing it with Mark Alvisi. They laughed at the possibly, but didn't want to jinx anything. Alli suggested she would like to see a reality show with competitors from all the divisions involved.

Check out Ava's fan club, some clothes, etc at www.AvaCowan.com
She has a new site coming out so stay tuned and check out the show at www.Siouxsportsafterdark.wordpress.com

Candid Questions between Sports After Dark and IFBB Pro Denise Masino

by Lisa White

Intelligent. Lithe. Sexy. Hot. Creative. These are all adjectives that can be used to describe IFBB Pro Bodybuilder Denise Masino. Then there is the other side of Denise Masino. Intelligent, lithe, sexy, hot, creative and an entrepreneur in the adult entertainment industry. Denise's interview with national level NPC competitors and hosts of Sports After Dark Eryn Strickland and Allison Moyer is a far cry from being ordinary. With the pre-conceived notions of bodybuilding and the encroachment of porn on the industry there are many who have voiced negativity while Denise has taken a positive and firm stand on both subjects.

In this interview it is very easy to see that Denise is a force to be reckoned with on or off the stage. As a competitor her passion for weight lifting began at an early age and with great muscle maturity and a "X" frame she moved forward in the bodybuilding arena at an advanced pace. She won every amateur show she competed in and won her pro card in 1995. During her years of competition Denise has seen and heard it all including the fact that female bodybuilding is a dying sport.

This subject is one that has been around for years and yet here the sport stands. Denise's perspective on bodybuilding is she has always seen bodybuilding for what it is. She realized early on it was an extreme sport; a niche, so it will have a smaller more hard core audience. She also believes fitness is its own niche since athletes in this division must have a background or some form of training in gymnastics in order to perform the routines. All the while, competing in an extreme sport that puts so much value on the men's divisions Denise states it has been disheartening. With the pinnacle of female bodybuilding being in the 80's Denise has been one of the last women, if not the last the ladies conclude, to be photographed in bodybuilding magazines and not due to her incredible build but for her sex appeal.

As disheartening as it may be Denise has stepped above it all by understanding why the publishers do. She explains in the interview that from a business stand point this is what sells the magazines. In the interim, intelligence and muscle paid off for Denise. She and business partner Robert Masino created a sixteen-page black and white magazine that was initially just photos of Denise. These magazines were sold as a classified and in each magazine there was a questionnaire to see what her fans were looking for.

Fans were looking for more out of Denise and she got their supported in exchange. Due to its popularity Denise took it to the next level by creating www.DeniseMasino.com which is her personality site. This site is nearly ten years old with thousands of galleries, which include competition coverage to x-rated topics. The site is broken down into sections for her fan base that has different tastes. Denise has made it a top priority to understand what her fans are looking for and this is her chance to make a connection with them.

With this work in the adult industry there are always questions and some negativity. When Alli asks if Denise ever feels that her adult work has prevented her from receiving sponsorships or placing higher in events her answer is quite simple. Denise has done well in her shows by placing second in the lightweight division at the Olympia and placing first in The Night of Champions with a sold out show. As for the questions of porn ruining the sport? Denise also believes the sport is a sub-culture to begin with and not mainstream. In the world of sports bodybuilding is one that does not receive respect anyhow. In her case she believes she is the creator of her own destiny.

With the development of another project named Muscle Pin-ups Denise will be further reaching out to her fan base. Regardless of what some may say Denise Masino is not ashamed of the empire she has created. As she states explicitly through out the interview "it's not for everyone." Through her intelligence and business sense she has created a fan base and product that is enjoyed by many.
BodybuildingFitnessFigure.com would like to thank Sports After Dark hosts Eryn Strickland and Allison Moyer and their guest IFBB Pro Denise Masino for this interview. Mo Knows Fitness

Mo Knows Fitness Show with Host IFBB Pro Marie Ann Newman and Guest IFBB Pro Charles Dixon
by Lisa White

The recent interview between IFBB Figure Pro Marie Ann Newman and IFBB Bodybuilding Pro Charles Dixon on the Mo Knows Fitness Show was not only enjoyable but relaxed and candid. Mo, as she is called by her friends, welcomes Charles on the show with the lightheartedness of two old buddies. Early in the interview Charles admits to being active in sports long before stepping on the competitive bodybuilding stage. Playing football from the time he was six led to keeping his body well conditioned and led to heavier weight training during high school and college. Mo and Charles both laughed when he says he was told not to train with weights at a young age because it would stunt his growth.

In actuality, the laugh is on anyone who said his training would hinder his size. As both Mo and Charles agree he may not be very tall but this man is "swoll." Excuse the gym jargon but it couldn't be any truer when it comes to the physique of Charles Dixon. At 5'5" he comes in lean to compete in the 202lbs pro bodybuilding division after earning his pro-card at the 2007 Nationals. When asked how he feels about the new 202 division he admits it's been a great addition in bodybuilding. This weight class has given athletes with smaller but well conditioned physiques a platform to compete against others on the same playing field. This is no complaint from Charles since he is a believer that it takes hard work and the right preparation for any competitor to reach the pro level.

Does Charles have plans to move out of the 202 division? His answer is no and he'd like to stay in this weight class for a while. He'd prefer not to put on the weight it would take to compete with the "big boys" at this time. Regardless of the division Mo asks the question everyone seems to wonder but doesn't have a pro to ask. How much weight does Charles gain between weigh ins and the show? His answer was between four and ten pounds which he admits is a significant amount of weight. He also recollects that he gained between four and six pounds at the Europa Show of Champions in Orlando this year.

When Mo asks if he has any tips for athletes trying to make it to the top Charles is adamant that "eating is the key" and knows eating well and having a cheat occasionally is essential. Besides eating properly he believes there is no room for slacking when it comes to training and the combination of proper nutrition and training hard go hand-and-hand and should be a top priority unless the kids or you are sick.

As for what's next for Mo and Charles? Both athletes plan to do Dexter Jackson Jacksonville Pro show in Florida. Although Mo has never done the show Charles has competed in Dexter and Gayle Eli's show in the past and said everything about the show is fantastic. The stage has a great set-up and the athletes are treated very, very well. Besides the prepping for Dexter's show Charles and North American Champion Chulsey Graham will be hosting their own radio show on Sunday evenings. He is hoping it becomes a break-through show because he wants be flexible and cover a variety of subjects his guests have interests in. Finally, when it seems like Charles couldn't do anything more he goes on to share the fact that he's also creating training videos. These videos are based on his own training principals and watching it will let people see how he really trains behind-the-scenes.

BodybuildingFitnessFigure.com would like to thank both IFBB Pro's Charles Dixon and Marie Ann Newman for the interview. Mo can be contacted at www.MarieAnnNewman.com, Customfitness4you.com and Facebook. Charles can be contacted at www.CharlesDixonPro.com, X Factor Sports, Facebook and Twitter. His radio show it can be found on www.PoseDownMag.com.

Mari Redondo takes the NPC Gold Coast Classic up a level

by Lisa White

Mari Redondo is busy. She is a business owner, model, mother, grandmother and wife, as well as, competition coach and promoter of the Second Annual Gold Coast Bodybuilding, Mari Redondo Figure, Fitness, & Bikini Championships. With all of these titles she has kept up the momentum and has even taken on more athletes recently who are interested in being their best through training and competition. Mari looks forward to the NPC Gold Coast event Saturday, May 8, which will take place at the Goodlet Park Auditorium in Hialeah, Florida.

This is not just another bodybuilding show though. With Mari's upbeat attitude and understanding of what it's like to be a competitor and an audience member she likes to do things differently. Mari is prepared for everything in an effort in part to makes sure there is something for everyone attending the competition to enjoy. The venue is cozy, but well suited for the numbers of athletes they anticipate along with the gaggle of fans that will be in attendance. And as always we can count on Mari not sparing any effort to provide for the athletes and audience members comfort. Mari along with co-promoters Sergio Pacheco and Dr. Peter Rhoden put a great deal of effort into promoting, finding sponsorships and those prized trophies for their competitors. Do not be surprised if Mari is tossing candy to the children during the show, as was done at the South Florida District Championships her show with Pacheco each November.

The picturesque setting of Goodlet Park is a terrific one for a few pleasant moments of relaxation and picture taking opportunities. As anyone who has visited knows Hialeah offers diverse cultures with wonderful music and food for family and friends who will have plenty to see while strolling around the area after prejudging.

In an effort to continue to provide onstage competition opportunities for athletes and grow the sport Maxmuscle signed on as a leading sponsor along with Mari’s Bodies by Mari personal training studio, Dr. Peter Rhodin’s Natural Health Care Clinic, and Physique World Gym. The show has been moved a level IV meaning it's open to all competitors in the state of Florida. IFBB Pro Don Long

IFBB Pro Don Long Shocks, Awes and Inspires
by Lisa White

Inspiration comes in many forms and often sprouts up in very unusual places. Within the bodybuilding community there are many stories, both good and bad, that are motivational, inspirational and even deterrents to the lifestyle. During the history of the sport there have been athletes with personal devastation and shock that was such a blast that they never competed again. And then, there are others. Others who have stood up against the adversity of life and not only risen to the top with a stronger sense of being but with the beliefs that a re-creation is possible. Such is the story of IFBB Pro Don Long who has never slowed down even during some of the toughest times.

For avid followers of Don and the sport it was shocking when he was diagnosed with kidney failure and had to go on dialysis treatments. As the story unfolded throughout the industry it was believed this was due to "unhealthy" choices made in bodybuilding. In his recent interview with John Hawley of BodybuildingFitnessFigure.com Don admits nature played a hand in his kidney failure and that bodybuilding was not to blame. He learned during that time he was born with only one working kidney and if anything, Don believes it was his diligence in the sport and the shape he was in that saved him.

Not only were people shocked by his health situation but inspired by Don and his sister Michelle at the same time. Although Michelle learned she was not a matching donor to Don she participated in a program that would allow her to help two people at the same time. Since Michelle was not a match to Don she donated her kidney to a patient that was already higher on the list and was a match to her. This loving act allowed Don to move into that spot. After this it was only a short wait and he received his own kidney transplant.
A year and a half later he learned his body had not taken to the donated kidney so the first year after was the toughest for him. Even through his health issues he continued training. Although he didn't train as aggressively as he had in the past; once he became accustomed to his new body he kept up the hard work only to shock and inspire fans several more times. Through retired in 1999 Don returned to the stage in 2006 with ISS Research sponsorship demonstrating for fans that he would not let this adversity keep him down. Don states his rationale for a comeback was not to seek to please anyone but himself and to demonstrate his abilities to control his course and choose his path on his own terms.

Since this time he has worked vehemently in the bodybuilding community with his wife Sarah, whom he married August 15, 2008. He has made a name for himself these days as a nutritional and competition coach, as well as, mentor to those who would like to participate in the sport. Although Don has trained national level competitors; he has no bias and loves to work with competitors’ regardless of level who are disciplined and have the will power to compete. Don's competition coaching not only serves to guide nutrition and training but to aide in the overall preparation it takes to step on stage with a winning package. Things such as posing, tanning and make-up are deemed crucial and Don makes sure these are covered when trying to create great stage presence, also.

Besides coaching clients to present themselves the best they can, Don has tried to instill in them the mantra that you become what you surround yourself with. With this belief system he will attest that if you socialize with positive people or gravitate towards people with a similar standard for life then you will become a more positive person. As Don says "this is the way you do things" and his mantra has proven that good energy, positive attitude and will power will not only sustain a person but will bring them to new heights.

BodybuildingFigureFitness.com would like to thank IFBB Pro Don Long and John Hawley for this interview. Don will be hosting his own audio show in coming weeks to be heard here and at his website that is currently under reconstruction. Don can be contacted at Donlongnutrition@aol.com and through our forum. His video titled To Hell and Back:Life of a Big Dog can be ordered at HERE.

Iron Works Show with host Michael Ives and the

Ancient City Classic Promoter Gene Schlossburg

Ancient City Classic

Dare to Jump on Stage at the 2010 NPC Ancient City Classic

by Lisa White

When it comes to fitness there are vast reasons people use for not exercising. Their joints ache, too tired, not enough time in the day and a hundred others. Many never think exercise may be the fountain of youth, but in the case of Gene Schlossberg he's proving them wrong. He's truly a testament that exercise is the fountain of youth since he's been in the bodybuilding circuit since 1949. Gene has reveled in his roles as bodybuilder, owner of two World Gym's and promoter of NPC Ancient City Classic for the eleventh year, as well as, co-promoter of the NPC All South. As a gym owner in St. Augustine, Florida, Gene has seen the evolution of the standard gym and has stayed current with the times. His World Gym on US Hwy 1 is 25,000 feet while the beach side express gym also offers 24 hour service for those who don't keep regular hours.

With all of this under his belt you'd think Gene would slow down but not a chance. For months Gene has been planning it and over the coming weeks he and his team of staff and volunteers will put the finishing touches on the setup of his Level II NPC Ancient City Classic bodybuilding show. This show is open to surrounding counties for bodybuilding and statewide for figure and bikini and Schlossberg likes it that way. He and his team have maintained this level show because he believes it's important to have them to build confidence especially for beginners and first timers. NPC competitor Mike Ives can attest to this as one of his fondest memories in bodybuilding came from the 2004 Ancient City Classic.

The venue is the Pedro Menendez High School Performing Arts Center and holds 540 spectators and regularly sells out. He also stated Alisa Hostettler and her crew from Hot Spot will be there providing spray tanning for competitors on Friday and Saturday. He gives "big props" to Alisa for her professionalism and great job she does for the athletes. For those wanting to compete in the event weigh-ins are on May 14, 2010 from 6-8pm and May 15, 2010 from 8-10am with prejudging beginning at 10:00am. The evening show is on May 15, 2010 at 7:00pm and usually ends around 10:00pm. Beacher's Lodge is the host hotel and is very accommodating for family and friends. The hotel is serving generosity up as it's giving discounts for those participating in the event. Family and friends who have come to support the athletes will have more than enough to do in the oldest and most mystical city in the nation. Ancient City competitors also are invited to take advantage of complimentary use of Gene’s World Gym while in town so that they don’t have to break their routine, but still enjoy everything this weekend has to offer.

With his 80th birthday last November he has seen many new athletes begin their careers; including promoter John Mier when he was an aspiring rock star. Now, John is not only a promoter for the NPC Jax Physique but is "one of the best trainers in Northeast Florida" states Schlossburg. He also admits promoting this show is a way for him to work with the new athletes and to enjoy the camaraderie of the judges and competitors. Enjoyment comes in all forms and Gene is hoping the NPC Ancient City Classic is nothing but. As for Gene answering the question is he competing again? Not at this time, but he admits if he can find a show with an "over-the-hill" division he'll be the first in line. And, why shouldn't he? His long history of talking the talk and walking the walk has paved a solid road for athletes to follow. For those who don't believe he practices what he preaches he can be found training five days a week for an hour or hour and a half at one of his gyms. If you still don't believe him; he'd love for you to come by and test him. As a matter of fact, he dares you to.

BodybuildingFitnessFigure.com would like to thank Gene Schlossberg and Michael Ives for this year’s interview. We also extend our best wishes to Gene, his team and the competitors in the upcoming event. For more information on the NPC Ancient City Classic please contact Gene at www.ancientcityclassic.com or at 904-829-3443.
