2000 Central Florida District Championships
.....
The NPC Central Florida District Championships were held on October 14 at
the Orlando Expo Hall, Orlando, and was promoted by Deke Warner.
.....
Lorenzo Newton, 34, of Largo, took the lightheavyweight class unanimously
and went on to take the overall Central Florida Men's Division title by
narrowly defeating heavyweight Russ Constantino (7 - 8) in the final
comparisons.
.....
Wendy Chant, 35, of Orlando, took the lightweight class unanimously but
had to overcome a tie with middleweight Suzanne Davis in the final
comparisons to take the Central Florida's Women's Division title.

2000 City of Palms
.....
After placing sixth in the NPC Team Universe (steriod tested), Scott Filosi
of Valrico cruised through the competition at the third annual Ft. Myers City
of Palms Bodybuilding Championships.
.....Filosi, a 32-year-old middleweight, received only first votes in his
class and for the overall.
.....In the Women's Open Division, 50-year-old Linda Deere of Osprey won the
lightweight class unanimously before edging heavyweight Beverly Hamlin for
the overall. Deere had three firsts and two seconds (7 points) while Hamlin
obtained two firsts and three seconds (8 points).
.....Presented by Terry Wertz and his Max Muscle store, the City of Palms show
was presented at Cypress Lake High School and was open only to NPC members
who reside in the Central Florida District.

2000 Coast-To-Coast
.....
Following 10 years of weight training without ever entering a contest,
Minerva Gonzalez of Tampa heeded some advice from her son: " . . . you're 40
now . . . it's now or never!"
.....Gonzalez took the challenge to heart. "I've been working out very hard
for four hours a day," she said. The effort made 2000 a memorable one for
her.
.....At 5'1" tall and 116 1/4 pounds, Gonzalez was selected first by all
judges in the Coast-To-Coast Championships open lightweight class and for the
Women's Division overall.
.....Two months earlier, in her contest debut, Gonzalez was a unanimous choice
in the Tampa Bay Classic Novice Division lightweight class . . . and for the
overall.
.....The Coast-To-Coast Men's Division went to 175 1/2 pound middleweight
Alexis Rhigas, 25, of Boynton Beach.
.....The Coast-To-Coast Championships, an NPC steriod-tested event, was
presented by Debbie and Vance Milton of Crescent Fitness Center in Dade City
and John Schleicher's Superior Sports Productions at the University of South
Florida's Special Events Center, Tampa.

2000 Junior Florida
.....
A middleweight man - - Michael Regina of Tampa - - and a heavyweight woman
- - Beverly Hamlin of Cape Coral - - earned top billing at the 2000 NPC
Junior Florida Championships.
.....Hamlin's remarkable beginning of a bodybuilding career began just six
months earlier when she started training! A week before this show, she
captured the City of Palms heavyweight class in her contest debut.
.....Regina, who has been pumping iron for seven years, was in competition for
the first time.
.....The Junior Florida, open to NPC members statewide, was presented by John
Pierce and his Pierce Productions at Naples High School.

2000 Southeastern USA
.....
Although she has been training for less than a year, Cape Coral resident
Beverly Hamlin has been unstoppable in her only three contests.
.....And, a former champion of Argentina and South America, Omar Borelli of
Miami Beach made a huge impact in only his second U.S. event.
.....Both Hamlin, 30, and Borelli, 33, registered open division victories at
the NPC 2000 Southeastern USA, Florida's final national qualifier of the year.
.....Presented by Pam Betz, the Southeastern USA was held at the Civic Center
in Kissimmee.

Miami Powerlifting Team - On Top Again!!
.....
The 2000 Amateur American Powerlifting Federation National Team Champions
of Miami have now become the 2000 Amateur World Powerlifting Congress Drug
Free World Champions. The championships were held in Las Vegas, NV on
November 9 with over 500 lifters competing.
.....Jackie Licata of the Miami Team captured the World's Junior Division with
a 3-lift total of 837 pounds and received two gold medals and set five world
records.
.....Sixteen-year-old Fernando Aspuru set four world records and won the gold
medal in the 275 pounds Teenage Division.
.....Eladio Rios in the submaster 308 pound division won the gold medal along
with setting nine world records. This brings his world record total to
seventeen for the year.
.....Robert "Bobcat" Darosh also took a gold medal in the 220 pound sub-master
division.
.....Angel Rivera, in his first world championship, took a silver medal in the
242 pound class of the Junior Division.
.....Coach Karl Bivans took a gold medal and broke three world records in the
Masters Division superheavyweight class.
.....The competition year for the Miami Powerlifting Team for 2000 was very
successful with the following: 18 gold medals; 3 silver; 1 bronze; 1 Best
Lifter; 47 world records and the AAPF National Championship Team Award.

Daytona Beach Classic
.....
Although he's seven years older than the Masters Division champion,
middleweight Manny Sotirin proved his "mature muscle" had what it took to win
the Daytona Beach Championships men's open.
.....Sotirin, 46, a gym owner who has been pumping iron for 25 years, nipped
Brandon Dunn of Seminole , 25, by one point (7 - 8) in his class before
taking the overall unanimously.
.....Another middleweight, 36-year-old Darci Haley of New Smyrna Beach was
unopposed in her class before earning four of the five votes for the Women's
Division title.
