2001 NPC Florida State

..... The 2001 NPC Florida State Bodybuilding, Fitness and Figure Championships were held on November 3 at The Boardwalk Beach Resort and Convention Center in Panama City Beach under the promotion of NPC West Florida District Chairman Pat Sporer. .....A total of 68 competitors, 58 competed at the Florida when it was held here in 1998, made the event a total success. ....."I feel that changing the Florida to 2-weeks before the Nationals was a good move allowing the competitors to go into the Nationals," said promoter Pat Sporer. ....."Rotating the Florida seems to be good for the whole state," said Sporer. "I'm very happy with the two Florida's held here in Panama City." .....Thirty-three-year-old Martin Lloyd of Panama City won the lightheavyweight class at the 2000 Florida and vowed to come back and take the overall title for 2001. .....Martin took the lightheavyweight class unanimously and moved to the finals to take a one-point margin of victory (7 - 8) over heavyweight winner Jeff Schwartzer. .....Beverly Hamlin of Cape Coral, the 2000 NPC Southeastern USA Champion, faced tough competition in the heavyweight class but took a unanimous decision for the class win and moved into the finals to take a majority of the judges vote for the overall title. .....The Fitness Division had four competitors and Shannon Dey, 31, of Tallahassee took all three rounds unanimously to take the overall title. .....Shannon is 5'5" tall and weighed in at 135 pounds and is the vice-president of the Legends Fitness Clubs. .....Shannon has been into fitness for 3 years and is the 2001 Southeastern Gold's Classic Fitness Champion. 2001 NPC Southeast Florida

..... Promoter Jorge Rodriguez of The Edge Personal Training took his 2001 NPC Southeast Florida Bodybuilding and Figure Championships to the historic Colony Theatre on Miami Beach (known worldwide as South Beach) for the October 20th event and the move was a good one as both the number of competitors and the size of audience increased substantially from its inaugural event last year in Coral Gables.
.....In the heavyweight class, the winner by unanimous decision was 30-year-old firefighter/paramedic Maria Cari Rivas of Miami.
.....Winning the pose down for the overall title was a very popular and deserving Maria Cari Rivas.
.....Weighing in at an awesome 198 pounds of thick, dense muscle 28-year-old Miamian Lee Walker dominated the lightheavyweight class taking all of the first place votes.
.....Finally when the dust settled, it was announced that the overall Southeast Florida winner was Lee Walker, and the crowd once again went crazy.
.....In the Women's Figure event, 23 year old Michelle Otero of Miami won both swimsuit rounds to take the short class and the overall title.

Southern Muscle Plus In France

..... The monthly French publication Le Monde Du Muscle ran a short article on Southern Muscle Plus in their December 2001 edition.
.....The magazine is published by Lucien Demeilles and Josette Roche-Shuey, who is a veteran competitor and lives in Florida several months during the year.
.....The magazine covers bodybuilding with articles on contest coverage, training and nutrition. Florida bodybuilding is covered each month with a column by Josette and in this issue the 2001 NPC Southern States was featured along with the article on Southern Muscle Plus.
