Bodybuilding the Key to Good Health

By Joe Weider Friday, January 02 2009

Tip of the Week: This week I want to discuss not so much a tip, as a bit of news. In the Dec. 19 online edition of NYTimes.com, columnist Tara Parker-Pope wrote about a piece in the esteemed medical journal Lancet Oncology that revealed a study in which a correlation was made between lean muscle mass and a lowered risk of cancer. In a study of 250 obese cancer patients, it was discovered that 15 percent of the test group who had low levels of muscle development in comparison with the rest of the group lived an average of 10 months less than their fellow cancer patients (continued).

The less they wear, the younger Michelle Gaulin and Jack Taylor look. In skimpy posing suits, their hard bodies look at least 20 years younger than their chronological age -- no mean feat when you're in your 50s. The couple's secret to their ageless look is a clean diet, rich in iron, which they pump most days of the week. (continued).

December Feature Stories

Old School

by NPC District Chairman and Publisher Pete Fancher,

“Old School.”
I have been called that many times over the past few years, and for good reasons. I am old school. Nothing to be ashamed of there. I have written a couple of columns for this site about how competitors communicated with each other in the past. Exchanged ideas on training, diet and contest prep. Old School (continued).

Dreading the Off-Season?

You don’t have to!

by Karla Podewils www.KarlaPodewils.com

Some may think this is the worst possible advice I could give, but it is what keeps me sane. I will be the first to admit that as soon as I step off the stage during my final show of the year I make a beeline for the nearest snack. And I have seconds. Oh! Glorious food! I find that the competitors’ diet is the biggest challenge and as soon as the “off season” comes I engage it what becomes the “No Crumb Left Behind Act of 2008”(continued).

Jeanne Colesanti
My First National Experience: NPC Nationals, 2008 Atlanta

by Jeanne Colesanti www.JeanneColesanti.com

With so many beautifully formed, symmetrically accurate physiques, one would find it virtually impossible to pick “A Best” or “The One,” which would proclaim to all the aspiring figure athletes that that is the physique that the judges are looking for. That one was decided amongst all of the hundreds of choices, “The One” narrowed down and proclaimed the overall winner.(continued)

-The Case of Black and White-

by Roger Cox www.RogPics.com

All cameras shoot in color these days. Manufactures assume (rightly so) that most people only want to see their pictures in color. For the most part that is true. However, it is NOT a universal truth, because as we know, good photographers do not just "snap pictures". When considering your bodybuilding images, don't forget about the tried and true black and white photograph (continued).

HANAURASANA - The Bow
by Lisa T. Daniel www.LisatDaniel.com

The Bow focuses on the pancreas, adrenals, digestive system, and muscles. It helps to massage the abdominals and the solar plexus and stimulate digestion. The verb and energy of this pose can be best described as “I can” (continued).

Blizzard of ‘96- A Story of Determination

By Kevin Richardson www.NaturallyIntense.net

There was a time when gyms were sacred places where the determined few made their regular pilgrimages for self improvement. Now in the days of sports clubs and fancy studios, those halls of steel and sweat are all but forgotten, but they live on in the hearts of those that were inspired by them (continued).

Dark Complexions Do Need Color

by Alisa Hostettler www.HotSpotSarasota.com

You don't know how many times I have gone to a show and saw a competitor with darker skin that did not have any color on. I would always ask them if they need any color and the answer was always the same. " I think I am already dark enough". Well, I am here to tell you, Dark people need color too! I have always called this 'the rookie mistake!' I believe that many a person of color has stepped out onto the stage without competition color on their skin, but that should have only been for their first show. After that they should have been informed, or educated themselves (continued).
